"ALLEGORICAL HERMENEUTICS - Developed by the Alexandrian School of Clement and Origen in the third century, this approach obscures the true meaning of Scripture by assuming that every passage has four or five meanings. Also called the mystical or spiritual method, it holds that the true meaning of Scripture lay hidden below the literal, obvious meaning. The Alexandrian School saw the Bible as full of allegory and symbolism."*
